Also penned down for voluntary retirement are officers who have colluded with crude oil thieves in the illegal oil theft trade.
In January, Nic Robertson of CNN interviewed several Nigerian soldiers who claimed that Nigeria’s chances of defeating Boko Haram are being hampered by corruption inside the Nigerian army.
The solders said they don’t ever benefit from the billions allocated to the defense budget, adding that some of them even had to buy their own uniforms.
Though the report was discredited by the Nigerian government, these claims have also been buttressed by the international community.
After winning the March 28 presidential election, former president, Olusegun Obasanjo urged Mohammadu Buhari to reform the military, saying “so much harm [had been] done to many national institutions including the military, which proudly nurtured you and me”.
In order to redirect the military, Buhari is reported to have tasked a small group to work out the modalities for the shake-up and scout possible replacements for those to be weeded out
A source privy to the current happening told The Cable that: “The military has been politicised and bastardised in the last few years. Corruption has reached unprecedented levels with the oil theft in the Niger Delta and haphazard anti-terror war.
“Nobody can say sincerely that the leadership of the military has lived up to expectations. We need a professional military. We cannot be relying on neighbouring countries to be bailing us out of our internal issues. Buhari will transform the military to an institution of pride for all Nigerians again.” he added.
The military has come under scrutiny in recent years over its seeming failure to curb terror and oil theft as well as corruption in the top hierarchy.
Buhari plans to effect this change by first firing the military chiefs who have been accused of diverting funds budgeted to the fight against insurgency to their private pockets.
Meanwhile the army’s offensive against Boko Haram reportedly got a boost yesterday May 3, when man who specialises in supplying fuel and food to Boko Haram was, arrested in Daban Shata in the suburbs of Baga, Borno State, according to the deference headquarters.
