Six Higher National Diploma (HND II) students of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and their National Diploma (II) accomplice have been suspended by the institution following last Tuesday's near fatal shooting of another student of the institution.

The students are six Higher National Diploma II students, one each in the departments of Civil Engineering, Accountancy, Marketing, Electrical Engineering, OTM and HCM as well as an ND II Mass Communication student.

Gun-wielding thugs suspected to be cultists had disrupted the YABATECH Student Executive Elections vote counting session, shooting sporadically.

One student of those at the counting venue, reportedly a part-time National Diploma (ND II) student, was shot and left critically injured.

Following the violence, the YABATECH management in a March 10, 2015 memo signed by the Registrar, Biekoroma Amapakabo, announced the cancellation of the union election and the students' suspension for their involvement in the violence.

“The college management, at its emergency meeting held on March 9, 2015 has directed that the students’ union election for 2014/2015 which was inconclusive is hereby cancelled,” the notice read.

“Students who violate this order will be sanctioned in accordance with the college’s rules and regulations.

The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Charles Oni told Sun News that the shooting took place outside the campus and no students died, contrary to earlier reports.

Students were also advised to "go about their normal academic activities without any fear of molestation.”

YABATECH has witnessed several cases of cultism related violence and it has been alleged that there are several fraternities are operating in the institution with official support.
